Sale of the Arnold Heine book collection

Over 1,500 books from the late Arnold Heine’s unique collection will be sold. Mountaineering and exploration titles from across the globe feature strongly, with many out-of-print books on New Zealand’s mountaineering history, tramping, hunting, geology, ecology, conservation and culture, as well as guidebooks.

WHEN

Auction: Friday 17 June 2022

103 lots of rare books, on view from 5.30 pm; auction starting at 7.30 pm.

A catalogue of the lots is available from the HVTC secretary.

Book sale: Saturday 18 June 2022, 9.30am onwards.

All remaining books. These books will not be on view until 9.30 am on Saturday morning.

Congratulations to FMC Patron Les Molloy, QSO

Warm congratulations to FMC's patron, Dr Les Molloy, who was appointed to be a Companion of the Queens' Service Order for his services to conservation and recreation. We couldn’t think of a more worthy recipient.

Les was a member of the FMC Executive and FMC Vice-President in the 1970s and early 1980s. While he played important roles in various conservation efforts, his contribution towards developing the concept of Wilderness Areas in New Zealand was groundbreaking and respected at the highest levels. At FMC, we remain committed to his vision for Wilderness.

Proposed land classifications for West Coast stewardship land announced

FMC President Robin McNeill welcomes the reports and assessments for stewardship land on the West Coast that were released at the end of May.

FMC launched its ‘Forgotten Lands' campaign in 2014, asking for the land status of stewardship land to be reviewed. Some of the land has high ecological merit while other parts are very dear to the hearts of trampers, kayakers and others, which FMC believes deserves the highest forms of protection.

FMC will be submitting on the recommendations.

FMC's submission on the stopping of Opawe Road, Western Ruahine

In May 2022, the Manawatū District Council publicly notified the proposal to stop part of Opawe Road, one of few access ways to the Western Ruahine Ranges.

FMC submitted in opposition to the proposal. In our submission, we outline that stopping the road for private gain is against the law. Any stopping of the road in exchange for an easement must have:

Access under conditions which are at least equal to that of the current unformed legal road, and free of restrictions.
Access in perpetuity.
Access which is protected from being revoked in the future.

Kea are a special part of the South Island backcountry, and FMC has sponsored each one of the Kea Conservation Trust's conferences, including its most recent, held on Queen's Birthday Weekend at Coronet Peak.

The KCT was formed in 2006 to inspire communities to protect this Nationally Endangered mountain parrot. Under 7,000 birds remain.

NZ Mountain Film Festival national tour

Screen an outstanding collection of adventure films from the NZ Mountain Film Festival to raise funds for your club.

Each year, the NZ Mountain Film Festival aims to showcase films from the high-octane sports such as skiing, climbing, kayaking and mountain biking. It also features increasingly topical environmental and mountain culture films to inform and entertain.

To host a local screening, you can choose a one-night or two-night film package, all of which have won awards at the 2022 NZ Mountain Film Festival. We are always looking for content for our Wilderlife website. Wilderlife is an online space for New Zealand’s outdoor community, providing a platform to find out news, views and how-to's on all things outdoors.
