Outdoor Access Champion award for Jan Finlayson
 

Jan Finlayson is FMC's immediate past president and the force behind our Same as SH1 campaign. Her outdoor access advocacy spans over a decade, starting in earnest as a member of the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board in 2011.

On 16 September 2022, Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission, recognised Jan with an Outdoor Access Champion award for her significant and lasting contributions to outdoor public access in New Zealand.

Herenga ā Nuku chief executive Ric Cullinane emphasises Jan's impact as a leader in the outdoor community over the last decade. “She has fiercely defended the public’s right to access conservation land – including the protection of wild lands".

Congratulations Jan! A well deserved recognition.

Mahu Whenua alpine ski route
 

FMC is excited to see one of our affiliated clubs featured in the news as a team of adventurers from the NZ Antarctic Heritage Trust's young explorers programme recently completed New Zealand's newest alpine ski route: the Mahu Whenua.

Mahu Whenua is a "world-class alpine route" running through Coronet Peak Station and public conservation land, says founder and Mountain Turk Club President, Erik Bradshaw.

Well done to all involved!
 
Seeking the Light
 

Seeking the Light, Gavin Lang’s inspiring story of climbing New Zealand’s 24 highest mountains, featuring his superb mountain photography, has been produced with support from the FMC Mountain and Forest Trust.

Safety in the Mountains
 

FMC's flagship booklet, Safety in the Mountains, is currently out of stock. We are working on an updated 12th edition, due out early 2023. In the meantime, you can still view a free online version.

Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club 75th anniversary
 

Past and present members of the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club are invited to join in the celebrations of the club’s 75th anniversary, from 4 to 6 November 2022.

The following events are scheduled:

  • Banquet dinner: 6pm on Friday 4 November at Little India, Blair Street, Wellington ($55 non-vegetarian or $45 vegan/vegetarian). Sign up online.
  • Overnight trip to Paua Hut: Saturday 5 November. Stay in the hut or pitch your tent outside. Cost for members: $40 for transport + $5 for bunk (unless camping);  non-members: $60 for transport + $15 for a bunk (unless camping).  Sign up online.
  • Catchpool Valley picnic and barbecue: 11am - 3pm on Sunday 6 November. Bring your own food and drinks. Sign up online.
